Derek Sheen is a student researcher and software developer located in Waterloo, Ontario. Derek has been passionate about science and technology since he was 7 years old, creating many cool projects using mobile development, websites, and machine learning. Derek is always striving to learn new skills in the field and participate in opportunities that make positive impacts locally and globally. Some of Derek's hobbies include playing the violin and exercising with friends. Furthermore, Derek loves to compete in various math contests and has ranked top in many of them!
Derek has recently published his project from the Canada-Wide Science Fair and Waterloo-Wellington Science Fair, which won many awards for his project on Detecting Melanoma Using Deep Learning!
Improved lock management by modifying Sera4’s application to transfer, organize and visualize data in real-time using ReactJS, SCSS, and JavaScript. Released various bugfixs to Teleporte and developed frontend pages to allow web clients to access data from the backend server continuously. Collaborated closely with development team for successful deployments while utilizing Git and Jira.
Designed and developed a GPT adventure-story game, AI Games, utilizing JavaScript, Django, Docker, and AWS AI Games implements DeepAI’s Stable Diffusion model to generate game objectives, obstacles, and storylines. Has 25+ game themes and generates an environment for your journey to start!
Developed a data analysis tool for the Line Emission as a Tool for Galaxy Observations Documented and analyzed the properties of molecular clouds Measured star formation rates using ML, SciPy, and AstroPy
Created scripts and web apps to analyze and label resistors, components, and circuits using Python, Flask, SQL, and HTML/CSS. Labelled, imaged, and preprocessed circuit components to create various datasets to train deep learning learning models. Utilized Docker, VimbaCamera, and the LabellerUI.
Taught engineering to 200+ students covering technologies such as Python, hardware components, and Arduinos. Designed and developed a job listing website for high school students using NextJS, ReactJS, Tailwind, and Firebase. Organized the Highlander Engineering Challenge and workshops with 60+ participants and $5000+ in funding.

Automated process of calculating evaluation measures and converting seed positive documents into links using Python.
